Vienna Woman´s Earnings Association

The Wiener Frauen-Erwerb-Verein was an association of women from Viennese society, with the goal of supporting women in economic distress and preparing them both theoretically and practically for professional life. (1866). (…)

The association voluntarily limited itself to economic goals and the expansion of employment opportunities for women through improved education, without considering social issues as a political matter. There was no intention of political activism for women.(…)

Just a few weeks after the association was founded, a free sewing workshop was established. Within the first six years, eleven schools were created, educating several thousand female students. (…)

In 1873, the Frauen-Erwerb-Verein acquired the building at 6., Rahlgasse 4. By 1880, the association had established 22 schools and courses. (…)

When the building at Rahlgasse 4 became too small, the Frauen-Erwerb-Verein commissioned Paul Hoppe to construct a new school building in 1909/1910 at 4., Wiedner Gürtel 68. The new facility housed a lyceum, a commercial school, a women’s trade school, and a household management training school (1910, approx. 1,200 female students).
