The Vohwinkel company from Vienna had been producing electric flashlights since 1896. Platinum-zinc elements, which supplied 4-5 amperes at 6 volts, formed the power source known as the revolver battery because of its shape. (…)
The flashlight could be switched on or off by tilting it; this was made possible by a “patented liquid” that penetrated the battery in a horizontal position and closed the circuit.

VARTA AG
In 1888, the company Accumulatoren-Fabrik Tudor’schen Systems Büsche & Müller oHG began the industrial production of stationary lead-acid batteries. To avoid competition from the two major electrical companies Siemens and AEG, which had also started production, the company’s founder, Adolph Müller, sought a partnership with them. After completing negotiations, the company was transformed into Accumulatoren-Fabrik Aktiengesellschaft (AFA) on January 1, 1890.
AFA’s first subsidiary, Generalrepräsentanz Wien, was founded in 1890 with its own production facilities.
In 1904, AFA acquired Watt Accumulatoren-Werke AG, which manufactured portable rechargeable batteries. These were used for flashlights, telegraphs and signaling devices. The factory became the second most important pillar of the Group, and its sales company Varta (distribution, charging and repair of portable accumulators) became world-famous.
