Flöge Sisters

Emilie Flöge learnt the tailoring trade. Together with her two sisters Helene and Pauline, she initially ran a fashion salon in Neubaugasse. In 1904, the workshop moved to the Casa piccola, where the sisters opened the ‘Schwestern Flöge’ fashion salon on 1 July. The Wiener Werkstätte was commissioned to redesign and realise the interior design of the business premises on the first floor of the building. Josef Hoffmann and Kolo Moser realised the black and white, strictly geometric furnishings as a total work of art of the avant-garde. (…)

Emilie Flöge travelled to the fashion capitals of Paris and London several times a year to find out about the latest fashion trends and discover new fabrics. The Flöge sisters’ salon also produced designs for the fashion class of the Wiener Werkstätte led by Eduard Wimmer-Wisgrill, and Gustav Klimt and the architect Liane Zimbler also designed models for the Salon Flöge. Emilie Flöge also presented her own creations as a model. The fashion salon was considered one of the most elegant and exclusive in Vienna and at times employed 80 tailors and three cutters.
